Chapter 17

Dixon

I was a creature of habit. The guys gave me trouble for it, but it was all done in jest. They understood how I was and they understood why. It was a need for control of something in my life. So on Sunday morning when I sat at the table eating my regular Sunday morning bowl of cereal, no one said anything about it.

Amanda didn’t come in on Sundays until dinner, so we were all on our own for breakfast and lunch. Every Sunday was the same, at least for me. One bowl of cereal, one apple, and a glass of orange juice. It was my routine, and I wasn’t about to change it any time soon.

Ryder walked into the kitchen a few minutes after I started eating. “I’m heading to campus to start looking into Jacinta. I tried looking into her last night, but she doesn’t have a driver’s license, so I wasn’t able to pull up anything on her yet. I’m hoping to get more out of her student file. Once I have her parents’ names, it’ll go faster.”

My mouth was full of food, so I gave him a nod to let him know I’d heard him. He poured a to-go cup of coffee, having set the timer last night before he went to bed, and then he was out the door.

Blaze walked into the kitchen a few minutes later dressed in workout clothes. That was his Sunday morning routine. He grabbed a Gatorade out of the fridge and tilted his head in my direction, grunting some kind of greeting that made him sound like a caveman before turning and heading towards the door that led down to the basement.

Next would be Colton, and I was expecting him in three… two… one.

“Hey Dixon,” Colton called out as he entered the room. Some things never changed, and I hoped they never did. The routine helped me feel settled. Sane. In control.

He headed over to the fridge and opened it, the same way he did every Sunday morning, just standing there for a few moments as he perused the shelves’ contents. I rolled my eyes. He knew exactly what was in the fridge. It hadn’t changed since yesterday, but he seemed to never have an idea of what he wanted to eat until he was standing there with the fridge door open, completely undecided.

He began pulling out the platters Amanda had left us for sandwiches, layered with meats, cheeses, and all the other toppings. I watched in amusement as he grabbed the loaf of bread and then a plate from the cupboard and began layering ingredient to make a sandwich. When he was finished, he sat down at the table across from me with his plate and a tall glass of milk.

I couldn’t help my raised eyebrow as I watched him take a bite, surprised that he had actually gotten his mouth all the way around it. “Really? A sandwich for breakfast?” I asked teasingly. He shrugged his shoulders and took another bite while flipping a finger at me.
